ACCOUNTABILITY & CONSTANT COACHING
Something I’ve heard a few times in the past after I’ve worked with a client for a few months is,
“I think I’m ready to do this by myself now”
When I hear this phrase, I first and foremost am incredibly excited. A lot of people we work with at Thrive come to us wanting to improve their self-esteem and confidence, not only in the gym, but outside in the real world too. So when the client feels they have progressed so much in their own confidence, we know that the start of at least one goal has been ACCOMPLISHED.
The second thing I wonder after hearing this phrase is,
“Why do you feel you need to take the rest of this journey by yourself?”
Coaching, of any description, is a collaborative process designed to improve a person’s capacity in any given area of life. Coaching is not a means to an end, nor is it something that needs to be ticked off a checklist before you can go and take the next step in whatever you want to do. In my own life, I’ve worked with various types of coaches in all areas - psychology, life coaching, business mentorship, and most recently my own fitness & nutrition coach. Yep, good coaches have coaches!
When you invest your energy, time, money and trust in to someone whose sole purpose is to guide your growth, the return in your own life is significant. So, when a client tells me they want to progress in their fitness and health journey “on their own”, I’ll often question what this might look like for them, and why minimising the assistance from me or their trainer seems like the obvious ‘next step’.
There is absolutely nothing wrong, and in fact I would argue there’s lots of things right, with being held accountable to your goals and working closely with someone on developing yourself for a long period of time. We don’t need, nor do we succeed, when trying to do everything by ourselves. Investing and trusting in the guidance of a professional brings long-term gain and reward to nearly all areas of your life. The more you invest in to yourself and your own growth, learning and development, the better outcomes you reap.
Professional coaches - be it life, business, mindset, fitness, nutrition, mental health - we exist for the purpose of helping our clients grow and realise their potential, day in, day out. We don’t look at our time with our clients as a short term process… we are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals in the long term, and we are there for the long haul.
So, stop thinking that you have to manage your progress towards your goals by yourself, or that eventually you’ll need to be totally and completely independent in all areas of your growth. Clients work with coaches for years and years, because the accountability and support is invaluable.
Asking for help & trusting in the opinion of a professional who you click with is always a good idea.
